Shadow mages channel the power of Drov to spy upon their enemies as well as inflict status affects such as blind and curse.
The signature spells of shadow mages are send shadow and ethereal. Send shadow works by creating an ethereal avatar of the caster, represented by an animal that is randomly selected (mine was a cochra). While the spell is in effect, the player has control over the shadow avatar. The avatar can only be detected when it dies (it echoes a death message to the room), or by those using the spell 'detect ethereal'. While this may seem fantastic for spying, it's actually a terrible class that's been broken for 15+ years. Avatars are unable to interact with the physical world or use any skills. The best way to counter Drovian spying is to simply sit at a table. The avatar is unable to sit at the table nor use the listen skill.
Ethereal works in a similar way, except instead of using an avatar and leaving the body behind, the caster turns ethereal. All equipment, except for a dull black gem, is dropped upon turning ethereal. The ethereal status can also be cast upon items.
A useful effect of Drovians however is that they are able to find hidden exits better than any class in the game. Since a shadow or ethereal person can pass through doors, spamming exits in any direction while in a room is a sure-fire way to pass through an unknown exit.
Missing from the list is a spell that summons a shadow; it follows a target and randomly materializes to cast 'blind' on the target.
Cure Blindness – drov viqrol wril - Removes blind status from target
